MX Academy – Shaping the Future of Motocross in Europe
Founded by former professional rider Chris Möckli, MX Academy has grown from a small initiative into the largest motocross school in Europe, welcoming more than 1,500 participants every year. With a unique philosophy built on safety, progression, and fun, the Academy trains riders of all ages and skill levels – from complete beginners to seasoned racers.
In this exclusive interview, we dive into the story behind MX Academy, its core values, the partnership with Honda, and how it continues to inspire and support the motocross community in Switzerland and beyond.
MXM- How did MX-Academy start and evolve over time?
MA- The initiative was launched while Chris Möckli was still active in his professional racing career. The goal was to pass on his extensive knowledge and experience so that others could benefit from it.
MXM- Can you tell us the story from the beginning to becoming the largest motocross school in Europe?
MA- It started small and grew steadily with each passing year. Today, we offer 4 different motocross tracks designed for different performance levels, allowing us to serve all participants in the best possible way. Each rider is challenged appropriately, but never overwhelmed. We now welcome over 1500 participants annually, making us the largest motocross school in Europe.
MXM- What is the connection between MX Academy and Christoph
Möckli?
MA- Chris Möckli is the founder of MX-Academy. He developed the entire concept about 15 years ago.
MXM- How has your experience as a professional rider shaped the
Academy's philosophy?
MA- Chris's journey included many ups and downs over 30 years of motocross experience and 20 years of professional racing, including 15 years as a Red Bull athlete. This extensive background provided invaluable insights into what works and what doesn't in this sport. Chris channeled all his passion and applied this knowledge to create MX-Academy, ensuring that riders of every level can achieve the best possible progress in the safest way while having maximum fun.
Target audience and training formats
MXM- What kind of riders typically attend your academy? (Kids, women, beginners, advanced?)
MA- Everyone is welcome to join us. We cater to children as young as 4 years old, women, men, clubs, and companies. All performance levels are welcome as well - from complete beginners with no prior experience to athletes with extensive racing backgrounds. Our primary responsibility is ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and safe while being able to make steady progress step by step.
MXM- How do you structure and adapt the training for different levels?
MA- First, participants are divided into groups based on their performance level. We then start on the easier tracks with smaller, simpler motorcycles. This approach helps participants who have never ridden a motorcycle before get started safely. Once exercises are mastered, participants progress to the next track. As mentioned, everyone is challenged appropriately but never overwhelmed. Progress must happen step by step.
Curriculum and technical skills
MXM- What skills and techniques are included in your sessions (e.g. jumping, sand riding, cornering, drifting)?
MA- We teach the complete program for learning how to ride a motorcycle safely and effectively. This begins with fundamentals like proper starting techniques and clutch operation. We cover cornering, jumping techniques, correct riding positions (both sitting and standing), and visual focus techniques.
MXM- How is the training progression designed?
MA- We always start with a comprehensive theory session. It's crucial for participants to understand the physics - how the motorcycle behaves in different positions and situations. After the theoretical foundation, we begin with basic practical exercises and progress systematically.
Equipment and logistics
MXM- Do you provide rental bikes and gear on-site? How does that system work?
MA- Absolutely! Participants can arrive in casual clothes by car - no special equipment is required. We provide everything needed: motorcycles, protective clothing, access to our tracks, professional trainers, and refreshments. Of course, if desired, participants can also purchase their own motorcycle or equipment directly from us.

MX club and racing team
MXM- How does the club with 350+ members operate?
MX- The club is primarily designed for those who want to visit regularly and pursue motocross as a serious hobby. Members receive discounted rates and the opportunity to train twice weekly throughout the year. Our membership has actually grown to over 600 active members.
MXM- How are riders selected and supported within the official Honda Racing Team?
MA- We use various criteria for rider selection. While performance and speed are certainly important, personality and team fit are equally crucial. Our team operates like a close-knit sports family where everyone supports and helps each other. Often, lasting friendships develop beyond just racing partnerships.
Biggest challenges and future plans
MXM- What are the biggest challenges in running an academy like this (coaches, facilities, scheduling)?
MA- The biggest challenge is weather dependency since our tracks are outdoors. Light rain isn't problematic, but heavy, all-day rainfall can create difficulties. Fortunately, we're blessed with experienced, long-term staff members who help us navigate these challenges effectively.
MXM- Are there plans for expansion - new tracks, locations or corporate training?
MA- Yes, we continuously develop plans and pursue new visions. Currently, we're working on expanding the school - potentially with new tracks and international locations as well.
Core values and atmosphere
MXM- What makes MX-Academy's approach unique? How do you maintain a high standard of training and community?
MA- Our uniqueness stems from our long-standing, highly skilled employees with extensive experience, consistently up-to-date equipment, meticulously maintained safe tracks, and our wealth of accumulated expertise. We've built a community where safety, progress, and enjoyment go hand in hand.
Brand partnerships (e.g. Honda)
MXM- How did the Honda partnership begin, and what does it mean for the Academy today?
MA- The partnership began during Chris's active racing career. He recognized that Honda produced the best motorcycles for both his needs and the school's requirements. Honda offers an extensive range of vehicles that are easy to ride and built with exceptional quality. It truly represents the complete package that Honda provides!
Message to the Swiss motocross community
MXM- What would you say to lesser-known riders, parents, or people considering learning motocross?
MA- Visit MX-Academy and try motocross for yourself! 😊 Fair warning though - once you've experienced it, you'll want to do it again and again. That's exactly why our club now boasts over 600 members. We look forward to welcoming you! 😉
